Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Swami Sriramnareshacharya ji
Nowadays, affluent people change their sofas, tables,
chairs, and decor every year. This should not be the case; one should lead a
simple life—a life akin to that of Ram-Rajya. Just imagine how Lord Ram must
have spent His time in the forest. Leaving aside His divinity—for He had
everything in the palace of Ayodhya—He did not utter a single word of complaint
during His time in the forest.
I once met a Mahatma in Vrindavan. I was deeply
impressed by him, so I asked, You have become such an exemplary Sadhu; what is
the secret behind this?
He said, I have come here to pour out my heart to you;
do not simply interview me. Yes, I always kept one thing in mind—that I had
come to become a Sadhu—and today, this is the fruit of that resolve.
I, too, had not come to Banaras to become a Sadhu; I
had come to become a scholar and to remain unmarried. I had no intention of
becoming a Sadhu, but once I became Ramanandacharya, I made an effort to embody
the qualities of a Sadhu to some extent and to look like one. I benefited from
this effort as well.
Just bear in mind that I am a Sadhu—that alone is
enough for a man to truly become one. What is the need for outward display or a
fancy seat? When the flesh withers away in old age, even that cushion will
begin to feel hard and uncomfortable. When the face shrivels and the teeth fall
out, will such cushions or fans be of any use? Certainly not.
